Harajuku

Harajuku street The streets of Harajuku are lined with beautiful trees, shops, and restaurants geared mostly towards Tokyo's fashionable youth

Yoyogi Park and The Meiji Shrine are also nearby. The Meiji Shrine was built in 1920 to honor the Emperor Meiji (1868-1912) who initiated the modernization of Japan.

Hello Kitty Although we did not visit Harajuku on a Sunday, it is recommended because the roads are closed to vehicles and opened to pedestrians and street performers.

As you can see, the Hello Kitty fad is alive and well in Tokyo, but we also saw many other cute toys.

Trees line both sides of the street as intricate stone walkways lead to hundreds of stores and restaurants. The Oriental Bazaar was Marilyn's favorite store and is an excellent place to purchase souvenirs.
