Ueno Zoo  Hear about the zoo!
Ueno Zoo opened in 1882 and is the most famous zoo in Japan. Here is one of our  zoo tickets and a  map (LARGE image 140 kb).

Ueno Zoo is especially known for its giant pandas. The entire nation went into mourning when one of the pandas died a few years ago. Panda

We enjoyed the zoo, but unfortunately most of the animals were in cages.

Baboon
Bordering the zoo was Shinobazu Pond.  It was constructed in the 17th century for aesthetics and tranquility.  It is now a water bird sanctuary and is adorned with lotus plants.  Many people were gathered around this beautiful blue bird and were taking pictures.  Why?
